The World Cup in Qatar
The 2022 Football World Cup in Qatar will be the 22nd edition of the Football World Cup. This is the first time that an Arab country has hosted the Football World Cup. The event is organized by FIFA and will kick off on November 20, Qatar’s national holiday. The estimated number of viewers is currently 3.2 billion. Of course, soccer World Cups are usually held in July, but this was inconceivable in view of the extreme heat that usually prevails in Qatar.
Nevertheless, in anticipation of the unbearable heat, Qatar has installed an air-conditioning system in the stadiums. For this very special event, Qatar built six new stadiums and modernized 2 others, at a cost of 4 billion dollars. The World Cup final will be held at the Lusail Iconic Stadium.
The 2022 Football World Cup will be the last to feature 32 participants. To get a feel for the real-life situation, World Cup organizers put 1,300 buses on the streets of Doha on Thursday, August 18, to see for themselves how the public would be transported. The city also had to double its number of drivers, to 14,000 during the World Cup, with drivers coming from Asia and Africa. The capital of this Gulf state must prepare for a real logistical challenge, with at least a million visitors expected. On the first day, Sunday November 20, Qatar take on Ecuador at 5pm.
Qatar no longer has room for its fans
Unaccustomed to accommodating so many people at once, Qatar is facing huge organizational problems for the Football World Cup. The country is unable to accommodate all the fans, as all the hotels are already fully booked. The number of rooms required, just for fans, is estimated at 128,000. Unfortunately, there are only 90,000 rooms in Doha, the epicenter of the World Cup, the majority of which are already booked. FIFA, with its sponsors and teams, will already be investing in most of the accommodation. Dubai, one of Qatar’s top tourist destinations and neighboring country, seems to be the solution for welcoming all the fans who have come from all over the world to attend the World Cup. As a tourist city par excellence, Dubai boasts a large number of high-end hotels and is preparing to welcome the fans it will need.
Indeed, Dubai’s hotels are already expecting to fill their capacity during the soccer World Cup, as millions of fans and supporters plan to use neighboring countries as their base during this unique period. Dubai seems to be the best choice, mainly because of its proximity to Doha. Supporters have already booked various types of accommodation (campsites, hotels, cruise ships, apartments, Airbnb…).
Nevertheless, there are still some upmarket hotels that are also starting to fill up. The NH Dubai The Palm is scheduled to open just before the start of the World Cup in November. It will be the city’s first football-themed hotel. It will offer a host of services designed for all soccer fans and enthusiasts.
Numerous facilities are also planned in hotels and key locations around Dubai to enable fans to follow the matches. Spaces will be reserved for fans, and giant screens will also be set up. Dubai is also preparing to manage the fans, to ensure that there are no clashes or fights between fans of other teams. The United Arab Emirates is keen to ensure that the soccer World Cup remains peaceful and takes place in the most favorable conditions possible.
The UAE’s transport facilities
The United Arab Emirates is made up of seven emirates, including Dubai, which will be opening its doors to soccer World Cup fans by granting visas to spectators at the various sporting events. Holders of the “Hayya Card”, reserved for those with tickets, will be able to obtain renewable visas for 100 dirhams (27 euros), which will allow them to enter the Arab Emirates several times, for a period of 90 days.
Dubai has also agreed to facilitate transport to and from the stadiums and the city’s hotels. First of all, Dubai airport is planning to increase its round trips with Qatar. Secondly, he agrees that administrative procedures should be made more flexible. Dubai-based airline Flydubai, a subsidiary of Emirates, has announced that it will operate up to 30 daily return flights between Dubai and Doha for the duration of the World Cup in Qatar.
The flight time from Dubai airport to Doha airport is just under an hour, for a distance of 376 km. In addition, three thousand buses have been purchased for the event, and no fewer than 14,000 drivers will reinforce the usual workforce. Each bus will be equipped with 5 video surveillance cameras linked to the command center.
